Manny, Diego and Sid are at it again in ‘Ice Age 4: Continental Drift’. This time they battle pirates and other sea creatures when their continent is set adrift. Of course, let’s not also forget Scrat who returns as the ever persistent saber-toothed squirrel chasing but never quite retaining his beloved acorns.
Writing for animation can be tough but immensely rewarding if you can manage to create lovable characters to hold onto loyal fans with. The key is to not just write a story that appeals to children, but to adults too, as more often than not, the adults will be accompanying their kids to the cinema.
Just like any other feature-length script, you will need to fill your story with challenges, twists and close calls in each act. Don’t think that because
it’s an animation, you can get away with a placid storyline, -even Disney films have heart ache and intense obstacles, just think of ‘Bambi’ and ‘The Lion King’.
Comic relief however is always a pre-requisite, to lighten up those edge-of-your-seat moments and to stay true to the cheerful, positive nature of the world of animation. Scrat is the perfect example, as is Dory from ‘Finding Nemo’ and Pumbaa from ‘The Lion King’.
